how to make outbox appear in Mail 4.4

This is of no interest to almost anyone, but I couldn't find a solution on Google.
Apparently Mac Mail 4.4 doesn't have a legitimate way to make Outbox appear in the list of mailboxes. A hint here guided me to make it show up at least temporarily, although after a couple experiments with creating and removing emails from it, the Outbox now seems to be (semi-?)permanently fixed in its usual place between Inbox and Drafts.
So here are the steps:
1) Mailbox > Take all accounts offline
2) Create a new message and hit "Send". It should disappear.
3) Go to Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox/Messages.
4) There should be one or more .emlx files in this folder. Open one by double-clicking.
5) In the top-right corner of the message, there should be a "link" saying "Show in Mailbox" - click on it.
6) This should make Outbox appear next to Inbox.
The results up to this points are reliable. Below are suggestions for things to try if you want the Outbox to not disappear when you quit/restart the program.
1) Fiddle with creating, deleting, and sending messages while offline, as well as quitting/restarting Mail. Redo the steps above if Outbox disappears.
2) Make Mail request a password every time you're sending email. Then the outgoing messages should land in Outbox. This may or may not have something to do with it staying visible.
